You have almost certainly heard it at a graduation, under a sports highlights reel or in a school hall. What a lot of people don’t know is that Hall of Fame was written and sung by three lads from inner-city Dublin.
Here is the official video, from The Script’s own channel.
Who are The Script?
Danny O’Donoghue and Mark Sheehan grew up in Dublin and had been in a 1990s boy band, MyTown, before spending years in the US writing and producing for other artists. Back home, they teamed up with drummer Glen Power and formed The Script in 2001.
Success took a while. Their self-titled debut album finally arrived in 2008 and went straight to number one in both Ireland and the UK, carried by The Man Who Can’t Be Moved and Breakeven.
How Hall of Fame happened
In 2012, Danny O’Donoghue was a coach on The Voice UK, sitting beside will.i.am. The two got on, and will.i.am ended up on the lead single from The Script’s third album, simply called #3.
The song is a pep talk set to music: a message to anyone chasing something big that they can make it. It went to number one in the UK and Ireland and charted all over the world. It never really went away, because coaches, teachers and video editors keep reaching for it whenever something needs to feel epic.
Losing Mark Sheehan
On 14 April 2023, guitarist and co-founder Mark Sheehan died in hospital after a brief illness. He was 46. Tributes poured in from across Ireland, and for many fans Hall of Fame took on a new meaning, as a reminder of what three Dublin friends had built together.
