I love stories like this! Maggie Ives was moved into a nursing home earlier this year for end-of-life care. She was suffering from chronic kidney and cardiovascular disease. Ives was not expected to make it through the night, and her family was advised to start making funeral arrangements when Maggie asked one of the nursing staff if she could try one of her old cures from when she was younger.
And that magic recipe? Guinness and raw eggs!
She told South West News Service:
I can’t even tell you what hospital I was in. All I can tell you is I was in there 22 weeks. I kept coming and going, slipping in and out of consciousness.
I had 133 different antibiotics by drip. I didn’t even know where I was, she said.
The doctors did not think that she would make it through the night, so Maggie decided to have a pint of Guinness and a raw egg.
When I made it through the night, I asked the staff if I could try an old recipe of mine when I used to feel rough years ago. I’m a great believer in raw eggs and Guinness. I swear by it.

So what happened then?
Maggie now downs the combo daily and considers herself a “medical miracle.”
“I feel like I’ve come back from the dead,” the lifelong smoker told SWNS.
Maggie said she feels Henwick Grange “gave her a new lease of life,” and she appreciates those around her.
“I can’t fault the staff here, from the laundry lady to the cleaners and from the carers to the management,” Ives said. “Whatever food I want, I order. If I want scampi every day, I have scampi every day,” she added.
But, even better, she’s feeling the best she has in a while. “I’m even walking again now. I haven’t walked for two years,” Maggie stated.
I am delighted that she made a recovery, and I hope you enjoyed this incredible story. All the best, Maggie Ives.
